American Junior High School Mathemtics Exam
The AJHSME covers subject matter normally associated with the
seventh and eighth grade mathematics curriculum and may be taken by all students
in grades 8 and below. The multiple-choice exam will take place November
17, 1998; high-scoring students will be invited to participate in the American
High School Mathematics Exam.
American High School Mathematics Exam
Each February, 350,000 students nationwide participate in the
AHSME, the first in a series of examinations that culminates in the International
Mathematical Olympiad. The AHSME is a 30-question, multiple-choice,
calculators-allowed exam, to be completed in 90 minutes.
American Invitational Mathematics Exam
The AIME is an intermediate examination between the AHSME and
the USA Mathematical Olympiad. All students with a score of 100 out
of a possible 150 on the AHSME are invited to take the AIME. The AIME
is a fifteen-question, three-hour examination. Each answer is a three-digit
integer, and all problems can be solved using precalculus methods.
USA Mathematical Olympiad
Approximately 160 of the top-scoring AHSME/AIME students (based
on a weighted average) are invited to take the USAMO, a six-question, six-hour
essay/proof examination, High scorers on the USAMO are invited to attend the
Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program, and the six highest scorers represent
the U.S. at the International Mathematical Olympiad.
